âIs everyone ready to go into the vilderness and see Vizard Island?â Maria asked eight children under the age of ten, gazing up at her with wide-eyed admiration. Shy smiles mixed with an occasional giggle made her ask, âAre you all laughing at the way I talk?â
âYou sound funny,â a six-year-old girl with pigtails replied.
Maria leaned down to the little girl and smiled. âThatâs because Iâm from Italy. We donât have any place like Crater Lake in my country, but you can eat pizza every day if you want.â This brought on a few oohs and ahs.
It had been two weeks since her arrival at The Caldera Lodge. She was still finding her way, very frustrated by the intermittent internet and lack of details from Spencer when he called. Heâd taken to writing her letters, letters that she would later describe as love letters, and mailing them with photos and swatches of fabrics and ideas. With him in Italy, and she in Oregon, it took his letters a week to make it to her, and by the time she offered her input, most of the decisions had been made. She did not feel this was at all a coincidence. She admired him a bit. If the shoe was on the other foot, it was exactly what she would have done to make sure her chosen agenda was followed.
She wanted to be able to talk to him anytime she wanted, and she did pick up the phone, or he called her every couple of days, but it wasnât the same as being in his physical presence, and she missed him. The time zones were also a bit of a problem. She wondered if he regretted the feelings that he had so passionately proclaimed for her. Some of their phone calls were a bit abrupt. Did he still feel the same way about her? When had she felt so insecure and needy before? Was this insecurity the result of how much Pablo had disappointed her? Why did she want Spencer to proclaim his love? What was wrong with herâ¦
At least it sounded like things had cooled down in Roma with Pablo.
According to Spencer, Pablo had, for the most part, left him alone. The police had shown up at the hotel a week after Spencer got back. They were investigating a missing personâs case, concerned about a report made by Pablo who was playing the part of the concerned fiancé. Alex had to call the police and tell them to drop the inquiry, but he wouldnât tell them where Maria was except to say that he was her brother, that she had broken off the engagement to Pablo, who wasnât taking it well, and that she was safely out of the country.
Her ribs hurt less each day, but they were still sore, and if she moved too fast or did too much, they reminded her to take it easy. Everything since the rooftop anniversary party had felt like a dream. She didnât know what to believe.
